What is The Big Picnic @ TouchWine and who benefits?
The Big Picnic @ TouchWine raises money for Hutt Street Centre. Every year more than 7,000 people sleep rough on the streets and in the parklands of South Australia. Hutt Street Centre provides essential support and developmental services to homeless and marginalised people in Adelaide.
Last year Hutt Street Centre provided 57,000 meals and social work services to over 1,600 people. Showers, laundry facilities, a visiting doctor and nurse, recreation activities, an aged care program, our education and training program and assistance with finding housing. Just some of the services provided to the homeless at Hutt Street Centre.
More than 75% of people seeking care at Hutt Street Centre have a mental illness.
Our essential services are funded by The Big Picnic @ TouchWine. This means making sure people can have a hot shower, a meal, do their laundry, safely store their belongings and access our visiting services. It provides basic care for people who have mental illness, giving them a safe and familiar place to spend their day and contact with people who understand their specific needs. These are the most vulnerable and marginalised people in our community. Visit the Hutt Street Centre website for more information. www.huttstcentre.org.au
Where is the best place to park?
Car parking is available along Greenhill Road, Hutt Road, South Terrace and also in the grounds of Glenside Hospital.
How many players do we need?
There are 6 players on the field at all times plus additional players who can substitute at any time during the game. Ten players on a team is ideal and you will receive 10 numbered shirts. Three players on the field must be female. One of those ‘females’ may be a male over 45 year of age or under 14 years (who should dress appropriately to indicate he is aged thus!)
What if our players have not played touch football previously?
There are a range of player abilities at The Big Picnic @ TouchWine. It is not a professional touch competition – it is about having fun! Some teams have players that have played a lot of touch while others are very novice. We run training sessions in most wine regions of SA as well as in the city so that any of your players who would like to learn the basic rules and how to play can attend those prior to the Touch Wine event day. It’s a pretty basic game – run forwards and throw backwards!
All teams will be given an event branded touch ball to keep prior to the event. Please write your team name on it and bring it on the day. Use it to practise your throwing and catching before the event!
How many games will we play?
We will endeavour to provide a draw so that each team plays at least 4 games. Each game is 15 minutes long. A draw will be sent to you with the times of your games and the field on which you will play each game. A site map will also be sent which shows exactly where each field is located. When we send out the draw we will also outline the points allocations which determine the ladder, the qualification for finals procedure and the finals times.
Massage, strapping and first aid
A massage tent and sports strapping service will be available in the NRG tent under the trees. Prices will be as follows:
- $3 for 5 minutes
- $5 for 10 minutes
- $10 for 15 minutes
-
$1 per ankle for Sports taping
How many teams are involved?
We anticipate there will be approximately 48 Touch Football teams.
What happens on the day?
Registration and Team Briefing – one member of your team will be required to attend the team briefing at the designated time (which will be advised but is usually about 9.30am). This will outline the procedure for the day and any last minute updates for your team.
Generally teams have at least 30 minutes between games. Finals will be played in the afternoon and the grand final will be played at about 4.00pm. More details regarding this will be sent when the draw is complete.
What should our team wear?
Your ten team shirts will be ready for collection either from Hutt Street Centre (delivery date to be advised) or at the team briefing. They will be individually numbered, and have your team name and logos on them. If you need more that 10 shirts you can order extra’s at $27 per shirt with your initial order. All team members must wear the shirts provided and in particular for any media interviews. No other logos may be added to the shirts provided and the shirts should be worn so the sponsor’s logos can be seen at all times (no cutting off the sleeves or rolling them up please!) We will send you a shirt order form to you for correct sizing for your team.
Shorts are best to wear as it might be warm. Footy boots (moulded soles only) or runners should be worn.
What Food and Drinks are available?
There will be a range of food and drinks available at the event including a BBQ which will be offering egg and bacon rolls from the start of the day then regular BBQ after that. Plus there will be All Fired Up wood oven pizza’s, a range of soft drinks, ice creams, and gourmet picnic boxes that can be pre ordered on line.
Refreshments – The Orchard Bar will sell Coopers beer, Cider and all the event wines ($5.00 per glass) from 11.00am. Soft drinks and ice creams available. You may not BYO alcohol into the licensed area.
What about activities for the non playing members of the family?
Entertainment – Music will filter across the parklands throughout the day. There will be games for the family, kids races and sports clinics running all day with some celebrity sports people there to help out. Practise your skills in quoits and petanque and prepare to try your hand at other fun and games!
Kids – a jumpy castle, face painters, clowns and graffiti wall can all be found inside KidsTown which will have volunteers helping entertain kids through the day.
Will there be any shade or shelter?
There will be umbrella’s in the main festival area and there are some areas around the outside fields that have shady trees. Teams may bring their own umbrellas if they have a strong base, however if the day is windy you may be asked to take down umbrella’s for public safety reasons.
Who else is involved in the event?
We are very grateful for the support of the wineries who are involved in our event as well as our Corporate Partners, Hutt Street Centre staff and volunteers. The event is a significant collaboration of resources. As players in The Big Picnic @ TouchWine we invite and encourage you to support those organisations who invest their time and resources into making Touch Wine the successful event that it has become over the past six years.
